2017

A lecture by Yoav Kraim, panelist at the side event "Article 12: Claiming the Right to Make Decisions",  held at the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, June 13, 2017

Self-advocacy in Israel and worldwide, has led to innovative practices for removing barriers and enhancing full participation, thus paving the way to the implementation of article 12 and achieving legal capacity.

The lecture describes the process of working with the self-advocacy groups of people with intellectual disabilities - Beit Issie Shapiro and Elvin Israel advocacy groups, supported by the Los Angeles Federation and the Ruderman Family Foundation - which led to the active involvement of the national advocacy group in changing the law of guardianship and their claim to sovereignty over their lives.
