Family Advancement Center
Beit Issie Shapiro established in 2007 the Family Advancement Center at the Sindian Early Intervention Center to provide guidance and support to hundreds of parents in the Israeli Arab sector. The Center runs an advice line operated by volunteers, assisting over 100 Arabic-speaking families a year about the rights of the people with disabilities and how to access them; support groups for 40 parents of children with severe disabilities every year; lectures and enrichment for parents; raising community awareness; enlisting community leaders through seminars and tours; and strengthening family ties through fun days and other activities.
The Center is headed by Nawaf Zmiro, an activist with a disability, who in 2012, received a Presidential Award for Volunteerism from the late President Shimon Peres.
